Sax playing is a family affair for the Ritchie Boys

January 2009

Jon Ritchie and Craig Ritchie - keeping sax playing in the familyWhen young Craig Ritchie went to see his uncle Jon playing baritone sax at the Edinburgh Fringe, little did he realise that he would be following in his footsteps within the year.

Craig enjoyed the show so much that he started playing alto sax at school . He also took part in one of Jazz Drummer Tom Bancroft's innovative ABC Creative Music workshops. Not only did that boost his sax-playing confidence but it landed him a part in the ensemble for Kidsamonium, a show specially composed by Bancroft to make jazz and improvised music child-friendly, and featuring some of the UK's finest players. Kidsamonium delights audiences young (and not quite so young:-) with its mix of great music and fun musical games.
Following on from the Fringe show Craig has now appeared with the show as part of the Glasgow Jazz Festival and, in January 2009, Celtic Connections.

Asked what he thought of his nephew's success Jon said, "it's great to see Craig getting on so well and enjoying it so muchl. Music should be fun and shows like this give both the audience and young performers the chance to see just how much fun it can be."

See Kidsamonium at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 12.30pm Sat 17 Jan, 2009
